We have always used Makaton, signs and symbols, with Tom. He has Down’s and his speech is really difficult to understand, even for us.

Do we really need Makaton?
As a former language teacher I am no stranger to language acquisition theories and techniques. But I write now as a Mum to other parents, rather than as a professional...Natty and big sis Mia signing 'flower'.

Miles, Makaton and Me
Miles was born in 1999.  I remember feeling very lucky and deliriously happy. All that changed when I realised my baby had Downs Syndrome.  We stayed in hospital for one week because I was simply too scared to go home.

Wonderful!
Maddy, who's nearly 4, has Down's syndrome. Her brother Zac, 2, has no learning or communication difficulties. We have been using Makaton since Maddy was about 6 months old. So Zac has been exposed to Makaton all his life. We learnt it as we went along.

Early communication
My sister Tia, 3, has Down's syndrome. She attends a regular day care centre. She has been using Makaton since before her first birthday. We learnt it from speech and language therapists and courses. And from Mr Tumble! Now most of her family use Makaton: we found it very easy to pick up.
