Additional meanings for signs in the Core Vocabulary.

There are many Makaton sign users who communicate mainly through using signs in the Makaton Core Vocabulary. It is, therefore, important that maximum use is made from the signs they already know.

This thesaurus is designed to demonstrate the expanded use that can be made using the Core Vocabulary signs. There are three ways in which the Thesaurus may be used:

• Section 1 the Concepts are arranged according to the Makaton Stages
• Section 2 the Word List is arranged alphabetically
• Section 3 the Additional Meanings are arranged alphabetically

The additional meanings included in this thesaurus are the most commonly used ones that we have been able to find. You may have other words that are particular to your dialect, region or culture. Do add such words as required.

You may find the concepts included in the alternative meanings for the signs strange and may question them. Remember that the sign we use in Makaton are devised from BSL. These alternative meanings relate to the alternative meanings of BSL signs and although they may seem strange from the perspective of the English language, they are correct.
